More people choosing to retrain as plumbers
New data from Logic4training shows an influx of candidates choosing to retrain as a plumber and other practical career paths in their 40s. This trend has remained on an upward trajectory over the last few years, driven by the skills shortage, concerns about AI and new ways into the sector for people with no previous experience.
The training provider has experienced an 80% increase in trainees on its new entrants plumbing course aged 40-49 and half of its learners in plumbing, gas and electrics are aged between 30 and 49, an increase of 17% in the past six years.
Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) estimates suggest the sector will need around 47,860 additional workers annually between 2025 and 2029 – roughly 239,300 extra workers over five years, simply to meet baseline demand, highlighting the opportunities that building services can offer at any stage of life.
