The value of volunteers

The CIPHE benefits greatly from the volunteers who contribute their knowledge, experience and insight in support of the profession. Whether helping at events, participating in committees and working groups, or taking on governance roles, their contribution is essential to our work and to our ability to advance standards.

At this year’s World Plumbing Conference and InstallerSHOW, visitors saw CIPHE’s public face through our exhibition presence and activities. What may have been less visible was that many of those supporting the event were doing so on a voluntary basis, giving up their time to engage with members and visitors, share knowledge and help create a welcoming and valuable experience.

Beyond events like these, the Institute’s governance itself relies upon volunteers. At the CIPHE’s AGM on 8 July 2026, election results will be confirmed for positions including roles on the Board of Trustees and as National President.

These are important roles with considerable responsibility and commitment that require people volunteering to help guide the future direction of the CIPHE and, by extension, the wider profession.

Many of our committees and specialist groups also depend on volunteers’ expertise and perspective. The Membership Group supports professional standards and progression while our Education Group helps shape thinking around training and future skills requirements. Over the last two years, employer representatives have played a critical role in supporting the development of new apprenticeship standards, helping ensure they better reflect the needs of both learners and industry.

Volunteers do not simply provide additional resource, they provide credibility. They ensure that the work undertaken by the Institute is grounded in the realities of the sector.

As we look ahead to the opportunities and challenges facing the profession, the continued willingness of members to become involved, contribute ideas and support the work of the Institute will remain one of our greatest strengths.

And for everyone already giving their time and expertise, I would like to take this opportunity to just say thank you.
